With a population of over 534,000, Jefferson County is the fourth-most populous county in Colorado.
Located in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area, it is also referred to as “Gateway to the Rocky Mountains.”
Nicknamed “Jeffco”, it was named after our nation’s third president, Thomas Jefferson.
Founded as their own territory in 1859, they never received a federal sanction.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park
Established in 1960, this nearly 12,000-acre park is perfect for an outdoor adventure.
With 36 miles of hiking trails, 22 of which are accessible by bicycle and horseback, a visitors center, over 100 picnic sites, and campsites, it’s easy to see why this is one of Jefferson County’s favorite places.

With many rock formations and natural arches, the area is quite popular for hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing.
Colorado Trail
This long-distance trail runs for 486 miles. It comes from the mouth of Waterton Canyon to Durango.
Trail elevations range from 5,500 feet to approximately 13,270 feet. Due to unpredictable mountain weather, higher elevation portions of the trail are prohibited during the colder months.
Lariat Loop Scenic and Historic Byway
Promoted since 1914 as a tourist destination, Lariat Loop includes scenic parks, historic sites, museums, and much more.
Majority of the scenic areas are now county or city parks and are accessible to the public.
